ADAS Assessments: Porsche updates statement on bumper cover repairs with ADAS features

Toronto, Ontario — Porsche has released a “Restrictions on Sensor-Affecting Repairs to Porsche Bumpers” position statement related to repair precautions for vehicles equipped with advanced driver safety assistance system (ADAS) sensors near the bumper covers.

Within the document, Porsche’s position statement specifically states that “if damaged bumpers are not properly repaired, painted or wrapped, this may affect sensor operation and give incorrect feedback to the driver, thus increasing the risk of an accident or collision.”

Porsche further provides restrictions in the radar transmission area which includes that here, “bumpers must not be painted, covered with car wrapping or decals, and cracks and breaks in bumpers must not be repaired by plastic welding.”

A contact from Porsche who originally reached out to I-CAR  also clarified that “the required work varies by model line, model year and specific vehicle equipment,” and “firstly, it is a good idea to check if there is any limitation on paint thickness for the specific bumper cover you are working on. Then, look at the specific front and or rear bumper cover removal and installation instructions to see what ‘subsequent work’ is required.”
