Calgary, Alberta — The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has reported that it is ready to help those recover from a destructive hailstorm that occurred in the Calgary, Alberta, area on August 5, 2024.
The hailstorm in question specifically occurred on Monday evening, wherein Environment Canada meteorologists issued an emergency alert for Calgary and other southern areas in the province, warning of torrential rainfall and potentially baseball-sized hail.
According to City News, the storm—which brought golf ball-sized hail in many areas—may have reopened wounds left from the large storm in 2020, which in turn resulted in $1.3 billion in insured damages.
In the aftermath of Monday’s storm, the IBC is providing insurance information to assist affected individuals and businesses. Collision Repair reached out to Calgary bodyshops, many of whom said they had yet to receive any hail-related claims, but it was only a matter of time.
Specifically, Albertans with general questions about home, business or vehicle insurance are encouraged to contact IBC’s Consumer Information Centre at 1-844-2ask-IBC or 1-844-227-5422. Individuals and businesses can also email IBC at askibcwest@ibc.ca.
Aaron Sutherland, Vice President, Pacific and Western IBC originally reported in a released statement that “rest assured, insurers are here to help and anyone whose property or vehicle was damaged is encouraged to contact their insurance representative as soon as they are ready to start the claims process.”
“The priority right now,” Sutherland continued, “is ensuring the safety of everyone who was affected by this storm. At this point, it is still too early to provide an accurate picture in terms of insured loss estimates for this severe weather event, but our thoughts are with all those that have been impacted.”
