Surveillance Stops: FTC proposes order to ban GM from sharing driver data

Toronto, Ontario — According to an official announcement, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is aiming to restrict General Motors’ data collection practices following the automaker selling consumer data.

Specifically, the FTC notes that under the proposed order, GM and its subsidiary, OnStar, will have to limit data collection while also offering consumers more options to opt out of data collection, as well as the ability to destroy personal data.

FTC Chair, Lina M. Khan commented in the proposed order that “GM monitored and sold people’s precise geolocation data and driver behaviour information sometimes as often as every three seconds. With this action, the FTC is safeguarding Americans’ privacy and protecting people from unchecked surveillance.”
