Teaching Trades and Technology: Assiniboine College hosts Young Women’s Conference to promote women in the trades

Winnipeg, Manitoba — Assiniboine College in the Winnipeg, Man., area, recently hosted grade eight girls from across the school district on April 3rd as part of the Skills Manitoba Young Women’s Conference.

According to Skills Canada, this conference was “a one day event for young women to learn more about the many trade and technology careers available in today’s employment market.”

Running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the conference featured a variety of keynote speakers and varied hands-on activities and tours to provide participants with a platform to connect with mentors and introductory industry skills.

In the college’s press release, Jana Sproule, Chairperson, Media and Office Tech noted that “in today’s labour market, it is important for young women to see all the careers available in the trades and technology field. The Young Women’s Conference provides an immersive experience designed to inspire and educate attendees about the opportunities awaiting them in trades and technology.”

The conference runs a number of times each year and is held at a variety of locations. The next event will take place on April 11th at the Red River College Polytech in Winnipeg and will again be held for grade eight students.
