Alberta Strong: Provincial Skills competition sees diverse winners list, all-female podium

Edmonton, Alberta — Last week was a Skills Canada extravaganza as the organization hosted both its Ontario and Alberta Provincial Skills Competition in Toronto and Edmonton, respectively.

Skills Alberta announced its winners in a Thursday evening livestream following two days of competition.

In the autobody repair, secondary level, Fiona Miller from Central Memorial High School took bronze; Ryder Johnston from CT Centre took silver and Central Memorial High School’s Brina Massey happily skipped to the stage to claim her gold medal.

On the post-secondary level, the autobody repair winners were Solomon Muradi, who attends the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), and claimed third; Eric Plints, also from SAIT, took silver; and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s Logan Gretin claimed the top spot.

Competition judge and Color Compass training coordinator Stefano Liessi said he was particularly impressed with the high school students this year.

“What takes place over skills week is nothing short of spectacular and monumental,” he added following the event.

In the car painting category, secondary level, Lizzie Clark from CT Centre took bronze; James Fowler High school students Liam Kane and Jacob Draymond claimed silver and gold, respectively.

Ladies cleaned up on the car painting post-secondary level, Lois Marks from SAIT took third-place; Annika Jones from NAIT took silver and Samara Godette from NAIT won first-place.

Three women stand on a podium in first, second and third. The first-place winner has her first in the air celebrating. The silver-medal winner stands smiling with her arms crossed behind her; the third-place winner has a slight smile and stands with her right foot forward, leaning back, and her arms are crossed in front of her.
L to R: Lois Marks from SAIT, bronze; Samara Godette from NAIT, gold; Annika Jones, NAIT, silver.

The next Skills Canada competition will be the National contest in three weeks, held May 30 to 31.
